This phenomenon is considered to be due to critical mass. When a limited number of people know something in a new way, it remains the conscious property of only those people. The Hundredth Monkey Syndrome hypothesises that there is a point at which if only one more person tunes in to a new awareness, a field of energy is strengthened so that new awareness is picked up by almost everyone.

Candy Chang — now living in New Orleans — does beautiful, civic minded design work. Her latest project in her newish home is I Wish This Was.

The project is reminiscent of The Bubble Project which was in full swing when I first moved to New York.

Both pieces aren’t complete until random people on the street have taken a moment to collaborate with the palette presented by the original artist.

New Orleans is full of vacant storefronts and people who need things. My neighborhood is still without a full-service grocery store. So I made these fill-in-the-blank stickers to give us an easy tool to voice what we want where we want it. Fill them out and put them on abandoned buildings and beyond. It’s a fun, low-barrier tool for citizens to provide civic input on-site, and the responses reflect the hopes, dreams, and colorful imaginations in different neighborhoods.

Gizmodo ran a story the other day about Apple’s Foxconn factory in Shenzhen, China. It was more of a photo essay, and in it were the two images above.

In the above images, you see the nets installed on the dormitories. They were installed because 11 people have jumped to their deaths in the last year.
