Hiroshi Sugimoto – Lightning Fields
At City College we were always very careful when loading film onto reels for development. Sparks from static, we were told, would expose the film thus ruining the images. Hiroshi Sugimoto has taken this limitation and turned it into a method for creating images.
Sugimoto hits the film with 400,000 volts supplied by a Van de Graaff generator, a few more images of which you can find at PDN’s Photo of the Day. For those of you in the Bay Area, a show collecting this work is up at Fraenkel Gallery in SF.
