Replacing a Fan on My MacBook Pro
It’s been bugging me slightly for the last couple months, but yesterday the right side fan on my MacBook Pro started sounding like a cement truck whenever it spun up. I’ve known this day was coming for a while since in looking at the grates that the fans sit behind one sees fingers of cigarette tar creeping up the back of the laptop.
As a side note, just after seeing these smoke stains for the first time, I remarked to Larry that I was freaked out knowing that the entire inside of the machine was caked in it. He brought it all home when he pointed out that all that’s staining the insides and hampering the functionality of the laptop are inside me at the same time. Eeeep!
Yesterday, I called Digital Society and got a quote from them. The laptop is still under Apple Care coverage, so the replacement would be free, but I was told it would take 2-3 days. Unfortunately at this point, I didn’t think I could live without my only computer for that long, so I got them to sell me the fan itself.
After a quick trip to Digital Society yesterday evening, and after a quick scan of the replacement instructions on iFixit, 30 minutes of work later, I’ve got a new, silently running fan in my machine. The fan wasn’t free, it cost about $40, but the cost and time involved were negligible when compared to the vacancy in news, imagery, music and connection to the outside world that would open up without the machine.
