The Infancy of Sound Noir

For the past month, I’ve been working with two friends, Andrey Radovski and Jacob Redfield, to organize a series of parties. I’ve been able to insert my tech agenda into the mix, and we’re concurrently working to build a companion website. We’ve settled on, and named ourselves, Sound Noir, and I registered soundnoir.net a week ago; it’s early yet, so don’t expect to see much.
We’ve been preoccupied with the lineup for the first party, so we haven’t focused too heavily on what all the site will entail, but we’re looking to have it regularly updated with various musings over music, including reviews and interviews, as well as tracks we’re liking and which fit into the aesthetic we’re trying to focus on. It will also function as a distribution point for our podcast made up of the sets we record at our parties.
Andrey and I have been talking about throwing a party for the last year. The idea was birthed out of an email volley in which I was complaining that in a very techno centric city, I wanted to hear house music. There are house DJs here, but I described having seen Sebo K in Barcelona and was wanting more of the same. I was looking for sounds similar to those coming out of labels like Objektivity, Dessous, Simple or Liebe Detail. Unfortunately it just wasn’t an option here. Fast forward a year, and we’re now three, sitting down and planning on creating a place where we can hear the music we’d like to hear.
What always happens when a person has a novel idea, is that several other people are having the exact same idea at the same time. As an example, look to the birth of photography in which three separate inventors had learned how to capture images on chemically treated surfaces at the same time. Similarly, NYC went from having a serious vacancy in this sound to flaunting several parties reflecting this ideology, House ‘n’ Home and Immerse included. Eh…the more the merrier.
Me being who I am, I’m focused on the technology and the imagery connected to both the project and its development process. To get some visual ideas moving between the three of us, I’ve setup a tumblelog where we can post and discuss the imagery we’re attracted to. If you’re interested in seeing how this evolution, have a look: http://soundnoir.tumblr.com/.
I work hard at evangelizing technology, but often times the apps I push don’t gain much traction with friends and family. I’m hoping this tumblelog, being as simple and straightforward as it is, is something the three of us can make good use of.
